Question: Does anyone know how "likely letters" work? Are they sent out only by the Ivies? When are they typically sent out? Do you answer them; if you don't can they be withdrawn? - Post a Response

thalassa_sea I don't believe the practice of likely letters is limited to Ivies only. Essentially, likely letters are letters colleges send out to certain applicants before decisions are announced that tell said applicants they are "likely" (hence the name) to be admitted. It is nothing binding, and it is not something that can be withdrawn or something that you need to respond to, because they are sent before decisions are finalized.

Colleges use them to woo certain students before they even know the full list of colleges they will be choosing from. Often, it works, too, because said students basically been told by the college that they are one of the school's top applicants.
